A Community Engaged
The success of Greylock ABC reflects not only on the students it supports but also on the community of individuals and families who have remained committed to the program. The Greylock ABC community includes a Board of Directors, Resident Directors, Academic Coordinator, Academic Mentors. tutors, host families, volunteers and Mt. Greylock Regional High School.
Board of Directors
Greylock ABC, Inc. is led by a volunteer Board of Directors (and the two Resident Directors) composed of community members committed to the growth and success of the program. Board members provide academic and social support and take part in various aspects of the program. The Board is generally responsible for establishing and carrying out of policies of Greylock ABC. Board members serve on various committees that meet the many needs of the program, from fund raising to academic advising.
Resident Directors
The two Resident Directors are a vital part of Greylock ABC. They act as mentors, friends, role models and house parents for the students. They nurture, help discipline and guide each student. They are responsible for creating a homelike environment that is conducive to success in the house and in school. They support and participate in the various activities of the program. Assisted by members of the Board, they maintain a standard of conduct in the ABC House that reflects basic respect for the integrity of each member of the group and concern for the overall welfare of the program in the community.
Academic Coordinator
The Academic Coordinator has primarily responsibility for overseeing students academic performance. The coordinator organizes the nightly study hall, monitors the progress of each student in each subject, arranges for subject tutors, and communicates student academic performance with the Resident Directors, Board, and parents. The Academic Coordinator also signs off on students’ course selections for the coming year.
Academic Mentors
Each student is assigned an academic mentor from the community. They provide another line of academic oversight and support. Students typically talk with their academic mentors every couple of weeks about their progress at school.
Host Families
Mainstays of the program are community Host Families, who each welcome a student into their home. Host Families also act as surrogate families to the students, and help further link the students to the community. Many of the Host Families have high-school aged sons or daughters. Students typically have two Host Families which they visit each I month. Students may stay overnight twice a year when the Resident Directors are on vacation, typically Columbus Day weekend and Memorial Day weekend.
Other members of the Greylock ABC community are Williams College Tutors and Williams College Big Siblings.
Williams College Tutors
Students from Williams volunteer to tutor and act as mentors for ABC students. They spend several evenings a week at study hall to help with specific subject areas and to address any general academic concerns.
Williams College Big Siblings
This big brother/sister program was started in 2000-2001, as a joint venture of the Williams Black Student Union (BSU) and Latino/a Students Association (VISTA). Each ABC student is set up with several big brothers or big sisters from the BSU or VISTA to help the student connect with Williams College’s community of color.
